Zumix, one of our favorite organizations in Boston, offers youth a musical alternative to violence and they do it incredibly well. Zumix kids play all over the city, including the Run to the Beat 5K where Tripod rocked out about Hong Kong Harbor, their love for Madeleine Steczynski (Zumix Executive Director) and more. You might think watching them is like watching a cute recital or something. It’s not. They’re good.
Well, if you like music and working with kids, Zumix wants you to join their board, especially if you have a demonstrated expertise in non-profit fundraising, finance, marketing and event planning.
If you’d like to learn more, we suggest perusing their website and attending their open house on October 19th.

The ZUMIX Board is holding an open house for prospective Board Members on October 19th, 2010 at 6pm. Please see below for more info.
ZUMIX is not a typical music school. Our goal is to engage and empower low-income youth through music, audio technology and the arts. We run various programs throughout the year including: songwriting, instrumental music instruction, audio engineering, music production, studio recording, radio journalism, deejay training, theater and dance. We run numerous ensembles including Jazz, Pop, African Drumming, Choral and Rock ensembles. We engage participants in community-wide activities including outdoor concerts, festivals, block parties, neighborhood clean-up days and other community initiatives - and we support young people as they navigate through adolescence, into adulthood.
ZUMIX youth are between the ages of 7 and 18 (most are teenagers). 66% live in East Boston, although youth from all areas of Boston are welcome. The majority of ZUMIX youth come from low-income families, many are children of immigrants who’s first language is not English. We serve 350 students per year and have hundreds on our waiting list. ZUMIX participants are vibrant, enthusiastic, positive young artists.
ZUMIX is well-respected in the field of youth work and has received numerous awards including: The Social Innovation Forum Award, the Margaret Stewart Lindsay Award, and most recently the 2010 Neighborhood Preservation Achievement Award. ZUMIX was also a finalist for the 2010 National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Award (formerly the Coming Up Taller Award).
In March of 2010, ZUMIX finished renovations on a 9,000 sq. ft. beautiful historic firehouse - transforming it into a LEED-Gold certified, state-of-the-art teaching facility. After successfully completing a $4.6M capital campaign, the ZUMIX Board has committed to helping ZUMIX meet its $1.3M annual budget, thereby ensuring the organization can continue to provide excellent programs as it grows to serve more students in its larger space.
ZUMIX is currently seeking outstanding individuals with demonstrated expertise in non-profit fundraising, finance, marketing and event planning to join our Board of Directors. Interested parties must fill out a Board survey, join one of our committees and must display excellence in commitment, initiative and follow-through. Committee membership allows current Board members and new prospects to build relationships and to work on projects side-by-side. The ZUMIX Fund Raising Committee (FRC) is actively seeking new members. The FRC meets monthly to strategize and carry out the Board’s fund raising plan. Current fund raising strategy includes broadening, deepening and diversifying our donor base through events and individual donor cultivation.
As Board positions become available, committee members are considered for full Board membership. Membership is determined by the changing needs of the Board and is a significant commitment. Members are expected to give approximately 8-15 hours per month to ZUMIX and be responsible for bringing in, through individual or personal networks, the minimum annual contribution required. While there is no requirement to join the full Board, there is also no guarantee that every committee member will be invited. For more information please contact ZUMIX Board Chair, Christopher Habetler, at christopher.habetler @ gmail.com.
