Throwback Thursday: Welcome to your New Apartment!

Recently ONEin3 came up with an absolutely brilliant idea; Throwback Thursday Blogs. Basically we felt bad leaving (hundreds) of blogs in the bowels of our site and wanted to bring back and refresh some of the old, but still relevant content. At ONEin3 we’re thinking about the start of a new academic year and the return of the hundreds of thousands of college students back in Boston. It’s an exciting time both for you and for us, but unfortunately the return can be stressful when housing problems get in the way. This blog, from September 2010 addresses that problem handily with several links to resources for information about renting, landlord/tenant disputes, and other information about living off campus. See below for more!

What with all 200,000 of you students coming back and enlivening the City for another school year, we know there will be some landlord/tenant disputes and they won’t all be because you slid down the stairs and your feet went through the wall. This actually happened at my friend’s house.

Here are a few City resources that can help you both avoid problems and deal with them if they arise:

The Rental Housing Resource Center mediates tenant/landlord disputes and provides great information on tenants rights. It’s also an office full of nice people and they’ve got your back. I had a problem with my landlord a few years back (my apartment’s electrical system was a mess/dangerous) and the RHRC was huge in helping me through it.

The Good Neighbors Handbook and The Top Ten Things a Student Should Know Before Renting are must read documents put together by the RHRC.

Take a look at the City of Boston’s Student Page. Everything you need is listed there, including ONEin3 so feel free to create a never-ending loop heading back and forth between here and there. You’ll learn a lot!

We’d love to hear about your experiences with move-in in the comments, so please chime in below.

Boston is a whole lot sweeter, thanks to this ONEin3er

Our friends across the pond lost out when Victoria Donnelly, age 32, moved to Boston to get her Master’s Degree in Journalism.  After completing her studies, Victoria loved Boston so much she decided to stick around for awhile… but not to be a journalist.

Out of Victoria’s passion for adventure (she wanted to be an astronaut when she grew up) and her affinity towards baked goods, a laboratory of sweetness was born.  Cakeology, Victoria’s flagship cupcake shop, opened in 2011 smack dab in the middle of the Downtown Crossing neighborhood of Boston.

An instant hit, Victoria is expanding to open a new retail shop on Washington Street.  Boston has long history of attracting innovators and Victoria Donnelly is no exception, her inventions just tend to taste good, really good (Victoria won cupcake wars not once by twice!).  Cakeology’s new location on Washington Street opens this fall, so stop by and say hi to this ONEin3 Bostonian doing big things.

Throwback Thursday: Dino’s Restaurant

Every Thursday is ONEin3’s Throwback Thursday! We dig through the bowels of our blog and pick out the most popular and still relevant blogs to reintroduce to you! We love seeing what our forbearers did and we hope you do too! Food tends to be one of our favorite topics to bring back, because, really, when does anyone get bored with reading about food? This particular post is a recommendation from Brittany McDonough for Dino’s Restaurant in the North End! With reasonable prices, big portions, and yummy Italian style eats, it’s the perfect place to hit up for lunch. Read on for more info!

Everybody is familiar with Boston’s Italian claim to fame, the North End, and its streets teeming with cat calls of delicious and memorable meals. The flip side is that the North End has become a sight seer’s destination to the point where penny-pinching locals often avoid the area in fear of lines out the door and high prices to boot. It’s easy to avoid the tourist-central restaurants with a little guidance and discover the best place for a quick lunch or casual dinner.

Dino’s Restaurant is a small corner spot with reasonable prices and massive portions with windows for walls to watch the foot traffic roll by.

Dino’s is bringing subs to a new level with a consistency you pray for. My lunch staple is the 16 inch Italian sub ($9) on fresh, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside French bread. Its sliced in half and drizzled with balsamic vinegar and olive oil then layered with Genoa salami, mortadella, sweet capicola, and provolone cheese. The ingenious oil and vinegar on the bottom seeps into the cold cuts and between the onions, pickles, and hots everything meshes to one miraculous experience. Continue Reading
