I play FIFA like, all day long pretty much. But here’s the thing: video games are actually big business and Boston is kind of a player in the video games industry. Ever heard of Rock Band? That’s right, dreamed up right here at Harmonix.
If you’re an entrepreneur, designer, coder, marketer, gamer, investor or anything in between or outside, there is opportunity right here in Boston and there’s ONE place to tap into it:
PoweredUp Boston: October 14 + 15, 2010
- Hear from leading Boston area developers and thought leaders on the latest local and global issues shaping our industry.
- Network with local developers, investors, educational institutions and government officials.
- Learn about the unique resources and opportunities available to Boston area businesses in the video game industry.
- Tour Boston game studios and Boston’s Innovation District.
The conference is only $35 before September 12th AND you’ll be registered in a raffle to win an iPad so get in on it.
Students, your rate is $20…I see no downside to that whatsoever.
To recap: PoweredUp Conference + chance for free iPad + job/connections/knowledge = Good, cheap and productive!

ONEin3 Boston Mayor’s Advisory Council Alumna Amelia Aubourg forward us this event so we know it’s going to be great, so great that we agreed to co-sponsor!
On September 15th, the American Red Cross is hosting a free discussion to get to the bottom of a very important question: How do we make a real impact through civic engagement? We take it on faith that high civic engagement is an unimpeachable good, but how do we make sure that our civic actions achieve our goals in the best way possible?
In light of the humanitarian disasters in Haiti and Chile in the recent past, these are especially important. Our resources, financial and human alike, can’t be wasted.
The Red Cross has brought in four outstanding people to help us answer these big questions: Emily Cherniack from Be the Change, Inc; Margaret Hall from the Greenlight Fund; Luis Matnog from the American Red Cross; and Maria Sacchetti from the Boston Globe.
And if that’s not good enough, we’ll be enjoying some post-panel refreshments across the street at Vox Populi.
Details:
When: September 15th from 6-7:30pm
Where: Rabb Lecture Hall, Boston Public Library, Copley
RSVP or more info: On the web here, massbaybyps [at] usa.redcross [dot] org or call 617-274-5237.
Sponsors: Haitian Health Institute, American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay Young Professionals Society, MassINC, United Way’s Emerging Leaders and ONEin3 Boston

A lot of young people in Boston want to get on Boards and contribute to the City in a meaningful way. There are A LOT of Boards out there who want young people to join. For whatever reason, sometimes the connection gets lost.
Well ONEin3 is here to help make that connection.
On September 7th, the Citywide Board of the Boston Centers for Youth and Families, Boston’s network of community centers, is electing new members. We know this is short notice (maybe that’s part of the problem!) but if you’d like to help your local community center build programming, manage its money, grow, cater more effectively to young people, market itself or anything else, this is your chance to make a BIG impact.
If you’d like to sit on the Citywide Community Center Board, please email Nikko Mendoza at NikkoMendoza [at] gmail [ dot] com with a letter expressing your interest and highlighting any pertinent experience.
If you’d like to get involved with any of the other Community Centers, peruse this handy list with contact information.
You should also know that the Community Centers offer great services, often for way less than you would pay at a gym, pool, tennis court or other location. Well worth looking at.
